How We Can Decrease Violence on the Earth

We certainly do not have enough meditation teachers, healing retreat hosts, peace writers, musicians of soul, and so on. The world needs more sacred space— time in between feeling and action. When we create space for connection and unity, fear dissolves; therefore, there is no need to dominate, control, or possess. Through this space, nervous systems become regulated, thinking becomes more positive, and a vision of a harmonious future becomes clearer.

meditation helps decrease violence

There are too many of us living in this modern world who are denying and suppressing our artistic gifts, our desires for slowness, our desires to cook meals from scratch, to paint, to sing, to sow seeds, to dance, and to take a nap. We lie to ourselves every day in order to motivate and force a sense of willpower to go into workplaces and maintain relationships that are causing us deep inner suffering. We continue to deny that we are suffering. We choose to go into public spaces and to get online with smiles, pretty pictures, and material badges to convince ourselves and other people that everything is okay.

As the heat on the Earth rises…emotions become increasingly unregulated. Physical violence erupts… the fumes of rage can no longer be contained and swallowed, or hidden. Everything has to come to light eventually. And so each and every one of us has a responsibility to acknowledge our inner sufferings, and to talk about those sufferings, to provide more sacred space for ourselves, to, yes, invest in that personal yoga retreat, to work part-time instead of full-time, to end a marriage once coveted in a religion that you no longer resonate with.

It is so important that we allow ourselves this freedom. We sometimes refuse to love ourselves because we find it shameful to do so. We fear that God will hate us. We continue to deny that God lives within us. But the Spirit of all beings on earth also lives within us. So, no, there are not enough self-love teachers, life coaches, and relationship workshop leaders.

We need to talk to each other more. We need to honor the voice of all. Let us stop looking in one particular direction and instead, look and listen everywhere, at all times. We need to speak our truths— without apology, but with sincerity and kindness. We need to remember how to listen deeply, to quiet our minds as someone else is speaking to us, to not manipulate our relationships for any means to an end, to honor relationships without any expectation, to allow people to breathe in and out of our lives, to offer others grace, patience, and genuine understanding.

We need to learn to quiet our minds, to meditate as someone shares their heart, their fears, and even their anger about the world with us. We need to breathe deeply, to receive what they are saying and to release it from our bodies, to not hold their pain for them, but to reflect to them how empowered they are, even in their vulnerability. So, no, there are not enough meditation teachers, yoga teachers, and poets.

We need to heal from the need to speak above or speak louder than the other souls around us. Some of us need to stop talking. Some of us need an opportunity to speak more. This awareness will only come if we take time to remember conscious awareness, and to live there in as many waking hours as possible. We need more circles, more art showings, more conferences with Q&A opportunities. We need more films. This is how we can decrease violence.

Let us pull our attention away from acquiring as much land as possible or building the most powerful technology. Let’s put our feet into some water instead. Let us take more hours to breathe deeply instead of working harder at achieving something. It is only if we can commit to any of this that we can heal as a society, as a global community, and as a human race.
